Principal Investigator Dr. Angela M. Crawley, Ph.D. Scientist, OHRI
Dr. Crawley completed a BSc in Microbiology and Immunology from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec (Canada) in 1999. In 2004 she completed a PhD in Immunology with Dr. Bruce N. Wilkie in the Dept. of Pathobiology at the University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College (Guelph, Ontario, Canada). Dr. Crawley then trained as a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Jonathan B. Angel’s laboratory at the OHRI and published 10 peer-reviewed scientific research and review articles on the immunopathogenesis of HIV infection. Dr. Crawley was funded by an Ontario HIV Treatment Network Fellowship award and earned a University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine Postdoctoral Award of Excellence (2007).
Dr. Crawley has been a Scientist in the Chronic Disease Program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) since 2012, an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa (Dept. Biochem., Microbiol. and Immunol.) and an Adjunct Professor at Carleton University (Dept. Biol.). Since 2012, Dr. Crawley has established an independent research program on the study of the immunopathogenesis of chronic liver disease. More recently, Dr. Crawley has pivoted to include SARS-CoV-2 research into her laboratory investigations.
Awards and funding: Dr. Crawley was awarded two new investigator awards: a CIHR New Investigator Award and an Ontario HIV Treatment Network Junior Investigator Development Award. Her research is funded by several funding sources, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR); Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC); Covid-19 Immunization Task Force (CITF); University of Ottawa/The Ottawa Hospital – Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Medicine. In addition to a full research program, Dr. Crawley is an active educator, teaching immunology at the undergraduate, graduate and medical school levels, in both English and French.
